The idiom and ad campaign phrase that once propelled the Gas industry, 'Cooking with Gas,' is now defunct in Victoria.

Since January 1st, 2024, following a July 2023 announcement by the Victorian Government, a ban on gas in new homes has been enforced.

For those considering planning, designing, or developing a new residential site, here's an overview:

  • All new homes requiring a planning permit are prohibited from connecting to natural gas in Victoria. In practical terms, this means no gas connections for cooking, heating, or hot water.

  • All new government buildings including schools and hospitals, will also operate solely on electricity.

  • The policy will not affect:

    • New homes that do not require a planning permit.

    • Residences with existing planning permits or those approved before January 1, 2024.

    • Homes that are already supplied with gas connections.

    • Renovations and extensions to existing homes.
