The idiom and ad campaign phrase that once propelled the Gas industry, 'Cooking with Gas,' is now defunct in Victoria.
Since January 1st, 2024, following a July 2023 announcement by the Victorian Government, a ban on gas in new homes has been enforced.
For those considering planning, designing, or developing a new residential site, here's an overview:
All new homes requiring a planning permit are prohibited from connecting to natural gas in Victoria. In practical terms, this means no gas connections for cooking, heating, or hot water.
All new government buildings including schools and hospitals, will also operate solely on electricity.
The policy will not affect:
New homes that do not require a planning permit.
Residences with existing planning permits or those approved before January 1, 2024.
Homes that are already supplied with gas connections.
Renovations and extensions to existing homes.
